One step at a time
Step-by-step instructions
- 1
Make a rib swatch
Cast on 20 stitches. Work K2, P2 across every row for 10 cm (4 in). Wash and dry the swatch. Aim for about 24 stitches per 10 cm with the rib relaxed.
- 2
Cast on
Cast on 36 stitches loosely. For a different width, use a multiple of four stitches. Leave a 20 cm (8 in) tail.
- 3
Set the rib
Row 1: repeat knit two, purl two across all 36 stitches. End with purl two. Turn. Row 2: work the same repeat. Knit stitches should sit above knit stitches, and purls above purls.
- 4
Continue the scarf
Repeat K2, P2 on every row until the scarf measures 140 cm (55 in), or your chosen length. Count 36 stitches regularly. Join a new ball at a row end, leaving tails to weave in.
- 5
Bind off in rib
Work each stitch as it appears: knit a knit stitch, purl a purl stitch. After working each new stitch, lift the preceding stitch over it. Keep the edge loose. Pull the final tail through.
- 6
Block without stretching
Weave in ends along the ribs. Wash according to the yarn label and lay flat at its natural width. Avoid stretching the rib open while it dries.
