One step at a time
Step-by-step instructions
- 1
Cut the felt
Cut one cover 14 × 9 cm and two pages 12 × 7 cm. Keep the edges straight. Felt does not need a hem.
- 2
Fold and center
Fold all three pieces in half across their width. Place the pages inside the cover so the folds align, with a 1 cm margin around the pages. Clip the layers together.
- 3
Prepare the thread
Separate three strands from a 45 cm (18 in) length of embroidery floss. Thread your needle and knot the ends.
- 4
Sew the spine
Open the stack flat. Start 1 cm from the top edge of a page and sew through all layers along the center fold with 3 mm running stitches. Stop 1 cm from the lower page edge. Backstitch once at each end for strength.
- 5
Add a simple border
Close the book. If you want a border, stitch only through the cover about 5 mm from its edge, using 3 mm running stitches. Keep the pages clear of your needle.
- 6
Finish and fill
Secure thread with two small stitches in the same place and hide the tail between felt layers. Store needles through the felt pages with their points covered. Keep the book out of reach of young children.
