One step at a time
Step-by-step instructions
- 1
Prepare your yarn
Use cotton that can tolerate washing. Aim for about 18 single crochet stitches and 20 rows per 10 cm (4 in). A small gauge difference is fine for a coaster.
- 2
Make the foundation
Make a slip knot on the hook. Chain 19, keeping the chain relaxed. The loop currently on the hook is not counted as a chain.
- 3
Work row one
Insert the hook in the second chain from the hook. Make one single crochet. Make one single crochet in each remaining chain. Count 18 stitches.
- 4
Work the square
Chain one and turn. The turning chain does not count as a stitch. Make one single crochet under both top loops of each stitch, including the first and last. Repeat for 20 rows total, or until the piece is square.
Helpful hint · Put a marker in the first stitch of each row if your edges start to narrow.
- 5
Fasten off
Cut the yarn with a 15 cm (6 in) tail. Yarn over with the tail and pull it all the way through the loop on your hook. Gently tighten.
- 6
Finish your coaster
Weave the ends back and forth through the back of several stitches. Wash and lay flat. Make three more in coordinating colors for a set.
