One step at a time
Step-by-step instructions
- 1
Mark a 40-stitch square
Count and mark a working area of 40 × 40 stitches. Divide it into four rows and four columns of 10-stitch blocks. Confirm your yarn covers the canvas without bunching.
- 2
Map the checkerboard
Across the first block row, use color A, B, A, B. The second block row is B, A, B, A. Repeat these two block rows once more to make sixteen blocks.
- 3
Fill the first color
Work tent stitches across each block assigned color A. Secure each new length under the back of several stitches. End the yarn at each separated block instead of carrying long strands across the back.
- 4
Fill the second color
Fill all color B blocks. Keep the diagonal direction and tension consistent. Check every boundary so each block remains 10 stitches wide and 10 rows high.
- 5
Trim and overcast
Trim the plastic canvas one unworked mesh row outside the design. Round any sharp corners. With yarn, overcast around the edge by passing repeatedly through the outermost holes and over the cut edge until covered.
- 6
Back the coaster
Cut felt to fit inside the covered edge. Sew it to the back with small whipstitches. Use for cups at normal serving temperature; do not use as a trivet for cookware.
