One step at a time
Step-by-step instructions
- 1
Prepare the canvas
Tape all four cut edges to keep them from snagging yarn. In the center, mark a square of 20 stitch columns and 20 rows by counting canvas intersections.
- 2
Test coverage
Thread a 45 cm (18 in) length of tapestry wool. Make a few stitches in spare canvas. The yarn should cover the intersection without forcing or distorting the holes.
- 3
Anchor and stitch
Leave a 3 cm tail on the back and hold it across the path of your first stitches. Work each diagonal from lower-left to upper-right, catching that tail on the back. Keep the same slant on every stitch.
- 4
Work the color bands
Fill the top seven rows across all 20 columns with color one. Fill the next six rows with color two. Fill the last seven rows with color three. Complete one row at a time with gentle tension.
- 5
Secure the ends
Weave each yarn end beneath several stitches on the back. If the canvas has pulled out of square, lightly dampen it and pin it square on a protected board until dry.
- 6
Finish as a patch
Remove tape, then trim to 1 cm (⅜ in) beyond the stitching. Fold the margins behind the work. Cut felt to cover the back and whipstitch it to the folded canvas. Keep the patch dry unless all materials are washable.
