Step-by-step instructions
- 1
Make a center ring
Chain four and join with a slip stitch in the first chain. Work the next stitches into the center of this ring, not into the chain stitches.
- 2
Round one: four corners
Chain three (counts as the first double crochet), then two double crochet into the ring. Chain two. Repeat three double crochet into the ring, chain two, three more times. Join to the top of the beginning chain three. You have four groups of three double crochet and four corner spaces.
- 3
Round two
Slip stitch to the next corner space, or fasten off and join a new color there. Chain three, two double crochet, chain two, three double crochet in that corner. Chain one. In each remaining corner work three double crochet, chain two, three double crochet; chain one between corners. Join to the beginning chain three. There are eight groups total.
- 4
Round three
Start in a corner. In that corner work chain three, two double crochet, chain two, three double crochet. Chain one. Work three double crochet in the next side space, chain one. At every other corner work three double crochet, chain two, three double crochet. Work one group in each side space with chain one between groups. Join. There are twelve groups total.
- 5
Round four
Repeat the same corner rule and work three double crochet in every chain-one space along each side. Keep chain one between groups. Join. There are sixteen groups total, with four chain-two corner spaces. Fasten off.

Finish the square
Weave in all ends in two directions. Dampen and lay flat, gently shaping four straight sides. Let dry before joining to other squares.
